The most well-known story comes from the Shiva Purana.
It is said that once Lord Shiva went into deep meditation for the welfare of all living beings. After thousands of years, when He opened His eyes, tears fell from them out of compassion for humanity’s suffering. These tears fell upon the Earth and transformed into Rudraksha trees.
From these trees came the sacred Rudraksha beads.
This story symbolizes divine compassion. Wearing Rudraksha is believed to connect the wearer with Shiva’s protective and healing energy.
Another story relates to the destruction of the demon Tripurasura, mentioned in various Puranic texts.
The three cities (Tripura) created by the demon were causing chaos in the universe. Lord Shiva destroyed them with a single powerful arrow. After this cosmic battle, Shiva meditated to restore balance and peace. During this meditation, tears of relief and compassion again fell to Earth, giving rise to Rudraksha.
Rudraksha here represents victory over negativity and evil forces. It is believed to protect the wearer from harmful energies.
The Padma Purana highlights the importance of wearing Rudraksha for spiritual upliftment.
It states that anyone who wears Rudraksha with faith and devotion becomes free from sins and attains peace of mind. Even touching or seeing Rudraksha is said to bring spiritual merit.

In the Skanda Purana, Rudraksha is described as a powerful aid for attaining moksha (liberation).
